Volker Gollnick received his Diplom Degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1991. He started his professional career at the German Forces Flight Test Center as a flight test engineer and research engineer for rotorcraft handling qualities. He was involved in the development of the first fly-by-light inflight simulator primary flight control system for the EC135 based FHS. In parallel he was a member of the handling qualities design and assessment team for the NH90.
